Three ways facility managers can upskill their careers
Upskilling is a term that gets thrown around a lot in the corporate world, but can be beneficial to help you take your career to the next level. Whether it’s broadening your horizons, becoming irreplaceable at your job, or getting a promotion – upskilling is your ticket to the next stop. If you want to do more than just take courses, try a few of these options.
Map out your career
Before you start upskilling, the one biggest question you need to ask yourself is “where am I going?”. Through career mapping, you can plan out a rough trajectory from where you currently are to where you want to be. You can then use upskilling as a specific tool to help you climb up the ladder to your dream position. The best is, as you acquire more skills, you might be able to open up paths you didn’t initially consider. This means you gain more options to change and try something new.
Undertake regular learning outside of the workplace
One of the biggest ways to continually upskill is to stay on top of the latest trends, innovations and changes in facility management. Regularly setting aside time to continually learn puts you further ahead of the competition. This doesn’t have to be accredited courses too, even taking the time to go through a LinkedIn Learning course or brush up on some productivity tips will have a compounding effect and make you a better worker. Showing a boss or manager what you’ve been doing in your own time can often also lead to getting time to learn during work hours too.
Join an industry-led organisation
An often untapped way to upskill is simply by networking and meeting people in the industry, we can often lead to new and different opportunities. If there are any local, state or national organisations that take your interest, sign up and look into their next networking event.
