How technology has kept us connected during COVID-19

During this unprecedented time, COVID-19 has affected the way many business owners are running their teams. There has been a sharp increase in the technology used for process management and general task allocation. This has been recognised in a variety of industries, however one that stands out is the strata industry.

With old work order systems shifting from paper to digital forms, and requests sent through an app rather than face to face requests, technology is more important than ever in keeping with social distancing requirements.

Technology has given our businesses three main things during isolation –

1. Connection to the outside world and each other
2. A means of continuing the work required to run your business
3. An opportunity to better track data

Connection to the outside world and each other

This is probably the single most important element technology has brought to our communities in isolation. For many, technology has offered a sense of connection and a way to reach loved ones. In business, this has made managers recognise that technology has the ability to keep your team connected, no matter where they are located. In turn, we are seeing a rise in flexible working hours and working from home arrangements implemented across the globe. If this continues, we could see increased opportunity for those who are unable to travel for work in the future.

A means of continuing the work required to run your business

Continuing to complete work and provide a service was something many businesses stressed about at the beginning of COVID-19 restrictions. As we settled into the new normal, it became clear that technology was going to support us along the way. Use of video conferencing systems such as Zoom saw a higher level of usage, as did facility management softwares in the industry. This was to increase safety measures implemented across all industries, while still offering the ability to communicate and make necessary changes as they came through.

An opportunity to better track data

Data is an imperative part of facility management, and prior to COVID-19, those using traditional facility management systems found on average they could only trust their data around 50 percent of the time. Data offers insight into the major resources used for a task or job and allows us to recognise elements of the business that may need improving. For many businesses, COVID-19 has allowed them to recognise the significance of using technology and data to drive future decisions, creating a more efficient business for all.
